Namaste Tbilisi Canudos Bar!
The bar has a busy indoor and outdoor area that is lovingly decorated. The many Buddha statues and the Tibetan prayer flags, which are prominently displayed everywhere, are particularly pleasing. The crew behind the bar know how to make guests feel at home. In contrast to the highly fluctuating Tbilisi nightlife, Canudos has been a fixed star on the horizon for night owls since 2011. Canudos was founded by Beka Talakhadze and Data Lapauri, who now run the successful and charming Dedaena Bar.
“Canudos Ethnic Bar is a place for everyone, it doesn’t matter who you are,” is the bar’s motto. Guests are spoiled with absolutely inexpensive but high-quality cocktails, beer, wine and shots. My personal tip: this place serves the best Mexican potatoes in Georgia – no exaggeration!
The budget friendly bar Canudos has a positive vibe that attracts pleasant and friendly people. As one of the few venues in Tbilisi nightlife, I have never experienced drunks or idiots causing trouble here.
WTF does Canudos really mean?
My desperate research had failed, Canudos is a municipality in the northeast region of Bahia, in Brazil? Really? Only a conversation with the new owner, Mariam Chkhatarashvili (since 2013) was able to help me. “Canudos” is the name of the town after the famous Georgian writer Guram Dochanashvili, who published the novel The First Robe in 1975 – there is an English translation of the work. In the city of Canudos there are very friendly people who are heroic with compassion. They are people who fight for freedom, people who sacrifice their lives for their friends, who die for their brothers.
Wow, that’s more profound than you might think and really suits the flair and ambience of the location, as well as the positive mindset of the crew and guests. Having been a guest here at least 50 times, I can confirm that Bar Canudos has earned its name.
The Phoenix from the Ashes Story
The lovely owner of Canudos, Mariam Chkhatarashvili, told me an exciting story. In 12 years, the bar has gone up in flames twice and experienced many ups and downs.
Mariam’s statement: I had left Canudos about an hour and a half earlier and was at home when I received a call from the neighbouring club: 🔥“There’s a fire!”🔥 My partner and I immediately rushed back, only to see the fire coming out of the building. The fire brigade asked to open a door and what followed was a night of destruction as everything inside the bar was torn down to completely extinguish the fire.
That night was a shock, a test of our resolve, but it also showed how strong the Canudos spirit really is. The cause is still unclear to this day, but it is almost certain that the fire was caused by someone else. Nevertheless, Canudos has come and stayed, defying every crisis and is considered by many guests to be the best bar in Tbilisi.

The Canudos Etnic Bar is LGBTQ+ friendly
As already mentioned, everyone is welcome, it doesn’t matter if you’re gay, lesbian or whatever you choose. The location thrives on inclusion and knows no boundaries. Canudos goes far beyond the boundaries of simple acceptance and creates a safe space where LGBTQ+ guests feel absolutely welcome in Tbilisi.
Tbilisi Canudos - Beyond Politics, but with a clear Position
Canudos does not compromise on its position in the face of geopolitical tensions. The name stands for freedom and acceptance, not politics or division. The operators have therefore decided not to offer any products that are directly linked to Russia, including “Russian” cocktails, Russian craft beer or products that are particularly popular with Russian guests.
The geopolitical stance is expressed peacefully and firmly. Canudos remains a place of peace and resistance, a place where words carry weight and still count.

How to reach Canudos Bar?
Canudos Ethnic Bar is located in the heart of Tbilisi Nightlife and the famous Amirani Cinema right between Vera and Marjanishvilli (Chughureti) and is easily accessible by public transport as well as by car. For guests travelling by public transport, the nearest stop is Rustavelli metro station, which is served by numerous bus and metro lines. From there, it is just a few minutes’ walk along lively streets very close to the famous Nair Nairi Restaurant.
If you are travelling by car, you will find several parking options near the bar. There are public car parks along the streets, but it is advisable to arrive early to get a good spot, especially at weekends when the area is very busy.
