Once upon a time: another Brick in the Berlin Wall

I have no idea how many times I’ve walked past here without realizing it. In fact, there is an unusual monument on Europe Square in our pretty Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia: a fully preserved piece of the Berlin Wall! The historical fragment was donated to Georgia by the Federal Republic of Germany in 2017. At first glance, it may seem a little macabre, but the venerable monument symbolizes the deep friendship between the two countries and their shared desire for freedom and unity – a desire that is more relevant than ever right now!

A piece of the Berlin Wall in Tbilisi as a symbol of freedom and unity

The Berlin Wall, which once divided Germany between West Germany and the DDR, stands for a dark era of separation and oppression after the Second World War. Its fall in 1989 was a historic moment that marked the beginning of a new era of freedom and democracy. The erection of a section of this wall in Tbilisi is a reminder that walls divide people. However, it also confirms that they can be overcome and that there is hope of restoring Georgia’s territorial integrity.

Even our collectively adored David Hasselhoff contributed to the fall of the wall with his weird voice:

Tbilisi Berlin Wall – All beyond the Europe Square in Tbilisi

Europe Square, where the piece of wall stands, is a highly symbolic place in Tbilisi. It represents Georgia’s striving for European integration. Europe Square reflects the desire of the population (not the oligarchs) to be part of the European community of values. The placement of the Berlin Wall fragment here underlines the importance of these values for Georgia and of course for David Hasselhoff…
